Centuries of History in Stillwater, Oklahoma

Outdoor oil pump

A proud town with a rich cultural heritage, Stillwater is home to some of Oklahoma’s finest museums and galleries. One of our favorites, the Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar, is located less than a mile from the Atherton OSU. This cozy downtown museum is “dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Stillwater.” Among its many fascinating exhibits are Summertime Fun, a testament to the charm of summer in small-town America; The Life of Boom and Bust Oil Towns in Payne County, illustrating the glorious birth, life, and death of the Oklahoma oil industry; and Stillwater and World War I, which not only shows how our town contributed to the war effort, but also gives visitors of sense of what it was like to endure trench combat. Those are just a few of the many exhibits that will appeal to history buffs and aficionados of Americana at the Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar.
